I am a microbial ecologist driven by fundamental and applied questions about how soil bacteria function under current environmental conditions, and how they will respond to climate change.

I use soil microbiomes (biocrusts) to better understand soil bacterial ecology and to promote drylands ecosystem health through ecological restoration in a global warming world. My research questions revolve around physiological adaptations of soil bacteria, their biogeography and dispersal mechanisms as well as microbe to microbe interactions.

My ultimate goal is to integrate the use of microbial systems in ecological restoration
